To Love, To Help

Your charitable gifts to The Food Basket, Inc. will assure that the families, youth and elders in our community who need food will receive help and assistance toward self- sufficiency through our services.

Although we seek food contributions for our warehouses to distribute constantly, The Food Basket, Inc. would be unable to operate without the generous financial contributions of individuals, businesses and foundations within our community. Government support amounts to about 10 percent of our support, maintenance fees paid by our partner agencies for some foods they select assist with some food storage expenses. However more than 70 percent of The Food Basket's annual operations is supported directly by annual fundraising activities including direct mail, special events, food and fund drives and a major gift program. In short, The Food Basket needs your help to continue its valuable work. Every penny of your support remains on Hawaii Island to feed Hawaii Island's hungry children, seniors, working poor and homeless.

Let everyone pitch in and work together.
No task is too big when done by all.

The life of the Kanaka Maoli, the indigenous Hawai'i people, was linked very closely to the kalo plant, also known as taro. Kalo is believed to have the greatest life force of all foods. According to the Kumulipo, the creation chant, kalo grew from the first- born son of Wakea and Ho'ohokulani. Eating kalo as poi is a celebration of life and emphasizes that humanity is one family and should eat from the same calabash.
